Our smartphones can keep track of our daily schedules and our desktops can make it quite simple to stay on top of our tasks. Then why do we still see paper planners lined up on store shelves? Well you know what? It is not just the old or computer less who are buying them. That’s right. There are a number of practical reasons to prefer a physical product over a digital solution.
The idea of carrying around a pencil and a notebook might be absurd. But it is not. Every day and all the time, we find ourselves inundated with notification, alerts, beeps and massages. Opening another tab, firing up another piece of application or accessing calendar requires on-screen attention. With so much of work and personal life dedicated to digital screen i.e. computer, sometimes the most helpful thing can be to take a fresh breath and simply walk away.
And that is when a paper planner starts to make sense.
Pen and paper give you the freedom to create a system that works for you. You can write down only the details you need to know and you don’t have to bother even thinking about the extra information that you already have in your head. Writing something as simple as: “meeting@3:50PM”, takes much less mental energy than opening an app and filling out many variables.
What are the other advantages? These physical calendars don’t come with notification bars, alerts and they don’t make noise (thank god!). They don’t put strain on the eyes and are guaranteed to never run out of battery life. You don’t need an account to access your daily schedule. They are also very customizable in their own right.
Want to feel very motivated? Sometimes, just holding something in your hands can make all the difference.
In the end, it is definitely a personal choice. But let’s just agree on one thing: Paper Planners are never getting outdated.
